Welcome back to The Recap where I host unusual articles with a biblical twist so you can walk out of the world and walk into the Word. Walk with me.
Let’s pray in: Father God, in the name of Jesus, we welcome Your Holy Spirit to lead this conversation. Open our hearts and minds to receive Your truth. Let Your Word be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Let’s settle some things real quick. You’ve probably heard all kinds of wild claims about the Bible—everything from “the Bible contradicts itself” to “it was written by men to control people” to “you can make the Bible say anything you want.” Folks love to throw around misinformation about Scripture, don’t they?
But here’s the thing: just knowing the actual definition of the word “Bible” shuts all that noise down.
The word Bible comes from the Greek word biblion (Strong’s G975), meaning “a small book, a scroll, a written document.” It’s the diminutive form of biblos, which originally referred to papyrus—the writing material. The Greek biblia literally means “the books” (plural).
So right there in the etymology, we see it’s not one book by one author—it’s a collection of books written by multiple authors across centuries, from different times, different nations, different backgrounds, and different languages.
Now here’s where it gets good.
People say the Bible contradicts itself—but how can a collection of books, written by over 40 different authors across 1,500+ years, be expected to read like one person’s diary? It was never supposed to be one person’s voice. The name itself—“the books”—tells us that. The design was always multiple voices. But here’s the kicker: those voices never clash. Why? Because they all had the same divine Author behind them.
When you dig into Scripture itself, it confirms exactly what the etymology tells us:
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (IYKYK)
These weren’t just random men writing their opinions or trying to manipulate people. “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (IYKYK)
Let me break this down for you:
✅ “The Bible contradicts itself”? Nah. Its multiple books written by different people under one Holy Spirit. That’s the whole point. Different perspectives, same divine truth. The etymology proves this was the design from the jump.
✅ “It was written by men to control people”? False. These men weren’t pushing their own agendas—they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Scripture itself says prophecy didn’t come by human will. They weren’t making it up. God was the Author; they were the pens.
✅ “You can make the Bible say anything”? Wrong again. When you understand that all these books—written across continents and centuries—are held together by one divine Author, you realize there’s a unified message running through them. You can’t twist what God has woven together without contradicting the whole.
The Bible = The Books. Multiple authors. One divine Author—the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God moving through them all.
Closing Prayer: Father, we thank You for Your Word that stands forever. Help us to study to show ourselves approved, rightly dividing the word of truth. Let us never be moved by lies or misconceptions but anchored in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Stay forever #lockedinChrist.
